South Africa, June 23 (UPI) -- Jermaine Defoe's first-half goal Wednesday gave England a 1-0 victory over Slovenia and boosted the English into the knockout round of the World Cup.
The victory allowed England (1-0-2) to leapfrog Slovenia (1-1-1) in the Group C standings and qualify for the elimination round.
